StomaphyX Transoral Fastener

StomaphyX™

What is StomaphyX™?

The StomaphyX procedure is a surgical method of fastening tissue and creating large folds inside of the gastrointestinal tract without incisions.

The StomaphyX™ is a pioneering device for Natural Orifice Surgery (NOS). Without incisions and with minimal patient downtime, StomaphyX can be used to create durable large tissue folds in the gastrointestinal tract. Performed under endoscopic visualization, StomaphyX™ is introduced into the body transorally (through the mouth). Once inside the stomach, the stomach wall is suctioned into the tissue port on the StomaphyX™ creating a large plication. Non-resorbable fasteners are then deployed across the fold to hold the tissue in place. Typically 10 to 20 folds are required depending on patient anatomy.

What can I expect?

The StomaphyX procedure is performed safely, quickly, comfortably, with no incisions and with minimal downtime. Because food in the stomach may hamper visualization during treatment, you will be asked not to eat or drink for 12 hours prior to your procedure. Prior to your procedure, you will be given anesthesia. While under anesthesia the flexible StomaphyX device will be gently lowered through your mouth into your stomachunder the visualization of an endoscope "video" placed down the shaft of the device.

Once inside the stomach, a small section of the stomach wall will be suctioned up into the device and fastened with a suture-like fastener creating a fold called a plication. This will be repeated 10-20 times. Depending on your medical condition, you may or may not be requested to stay the night in the hospital.

Most patients can return to work the next day or within a few days following their StomaphyX procedure. You should expect to experience some discomfort in your chest, nose and/or throat for the first few days to a week after your procedure. You will be asked to restrict physical activity for the first week and will be given dietary guidelines to help you maximize your success while your plications heal.

Is StomaphyX™ safe?

StomaphyX has been shown to be safe in hundreds of procedures worldwide. To date. side effects have been minimal and transient. the StomaphyX procedure is expected to be safer than traditional surgery which often involves incisions in the skin for access to the organs, and cutting around the organs to free the desired area for suturing. With StomaphyX, there are no incisions inside on the organs or outside on the skin. This reduces or eliminates the risk of incisional herniation, infection, adhesions or scarring. StomaphyX procedure are particularly attractive replacements for reevisional surgery because revisional surgery is among the most complex and dangerous types of surgery.
